@tuchkatube GG was pretty damn good, but Kerry Minnear and John Weathers made that band. Derek was a horrible vocalist, no dynamics at all. Without Kerry Minnear and John weathers, I would have never given GG a second thought.

@betrayedbysorrow totally agree with you. Who could have mixed classic with rock to get the same quality of music that Kansas portrays. I can't think of any that has done that. can anyone? Especially the music that is out there today. I call it garbage music. I realize that each to his own and that each group has there own charatoristics and styles but they are nothing compared to Kansas.

@chuckd5usa Wow that is incredible. I had Tull albums and Kansas albums in the good old days and to hear you say that is hard to believe. In light of the fact that Kansas was the "warm up" or opening band for Tull, I'd assume most of the people were there to see Tull so it shows how awesome Kansas is. I think Kansas and Tull are both amazing in their own right, can't compare apples to oranges.

Seen them as warm up act for Jethro Tull in the 70's. Blew Tull off the stage. Even after encore the crowd was still chanting for Kansas when Tull took the stage.

@ke2323 Steve as a young kid looks EXACTLY like the Italian kid a few doors down. The resemblance when they smile is scary. But Steve's dancing footwork in the early 80's is definitley from some pow-wow footwork.

@andante005 I'm a huge prog rock fan, listening to bands like Transatlantic, Spock's Beard, Dream Theater, The Flower Kings, and whatnot; but after I found Kansas, I really feel like I've found the source where all of the greatest prog bands get their inspiration. Highly underrated musicians. Dust in the wind, and Carry on wayward son were nothing compared to Icarus, Pinnacle and many others. Once of the best concerts I have ever seen, and continue to see them when they travel around, free or otherwise.

I was there! 1974, Winterland (SF), '74...$5. lineup: Jefferson Starship (why I went), Blue Oyster Cult, and (opening band) Kansas. As we walked up and viewed the huge painted poster on the brick I saw "Kansas" and thought, oh great--country rock. How wrong I was! Kansas was great, BOC was better, and JS... was OK since I knew all their songs by heart. Anyway, I remember this song with an opening violin solo under a spotlight...Awesome!

Sure, when I heard Carry on my Wayward Son it sparked my interest in Kansas, but this is the song that REALLY started me on being a fan of theirs. Lamplight Symphony is currently my favorite, but this video holds a special place in my heart. Awesome song.

...man! This is "Emerson, Lake and Palmer" cool. No doubt, the two bands at the time inspired one another, although I believe ELP to be five or so years younger on the media scene. So the Kansas principals likely learned much from ELP, Tull, Yes and other musically complex, theatrical rockers.
